Peach cake with a little spice

Mon, 08/30/2010 - 15:53
This peach cake is the perfect dessert for transitioning into fall. The cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg spice in the cake batter hints of cooler weather. The lemon zest surrounding the peaches keeps it summery. And the vanilla sweetens the sun-kissed taste of the ripe peaches. If you want a creamy topping, add a pinch of cinnamon and ginger and a little sugar into heavy cream and whip till you have soft peaks. Or add lemon zest into the cream. Or add cinnamon ice cream. Alone or with an addition, this peach cake delivers: spice, summer, sweet and delicate. The recipe was developed by Reeni...

Sun, 08/29/2010 - 22:45
On the Cake Boss episode that originally aired August 16, 2010, Buddy Valastro and his Carlo's Bakery staff made the biggest cake they've ever produced. It was for National Train Day. The boards they were given to build the cake on were too big to fit in the delivery truck. They decided to take two delivery trucks and the supplies they needed to assemble the cake at New York's Penn Station. When they unveiled the cake, it looked like a city with a train running through it. During that episode, they also made a cake for a retiring fire captain. It was decorated with an axe. a...

The Sickest Fish in the Aquarium

Sun, 08/29/2010 - 15:16
Note to readers: to protect confidentiality, I’ve used a fictitious name for the young man described in the article below. From the looks of him, the husky young man with the short-cropped dark hair and clean-shaven square jaw could have played defensive guard for the Univ. of Minn. Gophers. But I knew Joel in another setting, a local adult residential mental health facility where I worked part-time evenings as the front lobby receptionist. With two kids in college, I’d taken the job to contribute to the family income while trying my hand at freelance writing. Answering the...

Sun, 08/29/2010 - 04:57
On April 29. 1993, Joe Soucheray invented Garage Logic for his AM 1500 KSTP's signal talk radio show. Garage Logic is a make believe town in East Central Minnesota. It is filled with interesting characters and terminology. In the spring, when the temperature hits 70 degrees, the townspeople open their garage doors and start socializing. They keep track of how many cylinders they each store in their garages, and hand out hardware to Trick-Or-Treaters on Halloween. The married men abide by the 48-Hour Rule. If their wives don't notice a large purchase within 48 hours, they do not have...

Zucchini recipes

Sun, 08/29/2010 - 01:28
One zucchini plant can give way to over 20 zucchini. They are wonderfully prolific and zucchini has grown abundantly this year. August 8th was "sneak zucchini on to your neighbor's porch" day. If you are lucky enough to grow zucchini, have stocked up on it from the markets or have been the recipient of zucchini, consider these recipes. These zucchini recipes are best with the small to medium sized zucchini widely found at the Farmers Markets. Local zucchini is also sold at Kowalski's. If you have zucchini the size of a club consider the sausage-stuffed zucchini which uses...

Baked stuffed peaches

Sat, 08/28/2010 - 22:55
Peaches are abundant this year. Have your fill of them fresh and then look at baking with them. Stuffing them with amaretti cookies mixed with honey and almonds adds a delicate crunch to the soft flesh of the fruit.  The White Bear Lake Farmers Market has peaches from Michigan. Kowalski's has Colorado peaches on sale this week as well as organic ones.  Stuffing and baking peaches can be served elegantly in a wineglass or in a cereal bowl for an impromptu dessert. If you cannot find amaretti cookies, almond biscottis are also good. You want a hard, crunchy...

It's late August and Summer is REALLY slipping through our fingers. Despite being naturally drawn to Fall weather, I am clinging to Summer as hard as I can. Here, south of St. Paul, cocktail parties are a weekly habit and sitting outdoors to enjoy the weather is a MUST. Despite mosquitoes and humidity, summer cocktails are to be had! So considering the time of year and soon-to-be-changing seasons, what better way is there to cling to Summer than a series of fruity cocktails? If anything, this series will give you a reminder of what Summer is for all of us come Winter. The series is...

Discover new writers

Fri, 08/27/2010 - 02:52
Most people have a select group of authors whose works they prefer and look forward to their new releases. But like eating the same meals week after week it can become tiring and it is refreshing to try something new. Something new could be an established writer you have never read before, or a debut writer with a fresh style and a storyline that hasn't been recycled. With this thought in mind, The Roseville Barnes and Noble store at Har Mar Mall has established a book group focused solely on reading and discussing the works of new...

Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins (2010)

Thu, 08/26/2010 - 17:31
If the goal of a writer is to torture her characters, Suzanne Collins should be arrested for violation of the Geneva Conventions. For those who are not familiar with the books and are wondering what the fuss is about, The Hunger Games takes place in a post-apocalyptic future of America led by a tyrannical government. Once a year, two young people are taken form each District and forced to compete in the Hunger Games, a brutal, gladiator-like competition where the goal is to kill the other competitors while surviving in a booby-trapped wilderness. Collins’s hero, sixteen year old,...

Friendship On-A-Stick

Thu, 08/26/2010 - 17:24
It's that time of year: Minnesota State Fair time, located off Snelling in the heart of our great State Capital- St. Paul, the Minnesota State Fair is one of the most widely renowned. (I may be prejudiced). Going to the state fair, fighting through the mob of people, and bonding while gorging yourself in as many on-a-stick delicacies as you can stomach, makes the Minnesota State Fair a great place to go with your best friend. The heat, the crowd, the food. What else could you want? While it's a general rule that you walk into this experience without judging each other, that...
