Apple Valley is a young, growing town in a location that affords easy access to the Airport, the Mall of America, Minneapolis, and St. Paul.

Apple Valley started out as Lebanon township. The first people probably came from the east coast in 1855. On April 6, 1858, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners created Union Township. The Board met again on April 26, 1858 and changed the boundaries of Union Township, creating Lebanon Township from a portion of the former Union Township. The town consisted of only a few hundred people until the late fifties.

The post-war boom changed everything.. Residential neighborhoods began to develop in the spring of 1955. A Planning Commission was established to keep up with the incredible growth. In the sixties, Orrin Thompson built up large tracts of Apple Valley.. Thompson chose the name “Apple Valley” for several of his plats along highway 42. He planted an apple in front of every home in his development. In 1968, the citizens voted to incorporate the town as Apple Valley.

Apple Valley Homes

During the last half of 2006, Northstar Regional MLS reported 169 single family Apple Valley homes for sale that closed during that time period. The average home listed at $328,544 and sold at $322,798, or 98.25% of list price. Average square footage was 2508. The majority of homes were two story dwellings built in the 80′s and 90′s.

Right now, a number of fixer uppers are available in the 200k-225k, but they will need serious work. If your tastes range toward the highbrau end of the spectrum, you can usually find some multi-million dollar mansions in Heritage Hills. Newer homes can still be found in neighborhoods like Cobblestone Lake, Whispering Pines, and Prairie Crossing.

Townhomes in Apple Valley

Apple Valley Minnesota has one of the largest, newest inventories of available townhomes in the region. There are plenty of units which are less than ten years old, which means the Minnesota stautory builders warranty still applies to the buildings, fees are still low, and most have maintenance free exteriors to help keep fees low. If you are a baby boomer with bad knees, there are some all-one-level units in Regatta and Mistwood that are build by Pulte, and offer life without stairs. Most have wonderful sunrooms attached to a great room with fireplace, a large dining area, and a large sunny eat-in kitchen. These neighborhoods also have great starter townhomes with two bedrooms, two baths, and an attached garage for comfort, convenience, and security. Fees are very low here, so this is the perfect spot for making your first investment in Apple Valley real estate. There are a number of associations that are close to the Cedar and Highway 42 intersection, which is the thriving business district for the area, offering a giant Target store, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, numerous dinning choices, and a multiscreen mega movie theater.

On the upper end of the Apple Valley MN real estate price spectrum, there are some fantastic, gigantic one level Wensman-built townhomes with walk-out basements just of of Diamond Path. Some of these have over three thousand finished square feet and include custom wet-bars, deluxe master suites, built-ins, granite countertops, maple cabinets, jacuzzis, and more. Half a million bucks or so will get you there. If you are shopping in this price range, you can also get a nice new detatched townhome in Cobblestone Lake. Zoned heat makes all the difference in the cold Minnesota climes. If you are shopping in the 300′s, be sure to check out the homes on Falcon Drive near McAndrew and Johnnycake Ridge Road intersection.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – We rarely think about our air conditioners in the middle of winter, but Minneapolis police say we should.

Authorities say they’ve seen a rash of air conditioning unit thefts in the past week, centered in the Fourth Precinct of North Minneapolis.

Last week, Sadedora Rogers let her dogs out, and immediately knew someone had been in her backyard. Her air conditioning unit had been tampered with, and she knew why.

“Because you can get a pretty penny for copper nowadays,” she said.

In five cases since late January, Minneapolis police say thieves stripped copper coils from the inside of the air conditioning units. Typically, the copper is sold at scrap metal recycling businesses. The market price of copper this week was approximately $3.90 a pound. Police say thieves may target air conditioning in the winter, because people don’t normally think to check their units in the winter.

Rogers said the thieves didn’t get all the way into her air conditioner – she thinks her dogs and security lights scared them away.

“Somebody is that close to your house, doing something they know they shouldn’t be doing while you are in the house asleep. It’s very scary,” Rogers said.

Francisco Garcia-James says his family was also victimized by thieves. They found out when his father heard a loud noise overnight.

“In the morning, he checked and said we are not going to have cold air for summer; and summer gets really hot, so that sucks,” Garcia-James said.

His family can’t afford to replace the expensive unit right now, and they will suffer without cooling as summer comes.

It’s not just homes that are being targeted. A business on Broadway put up a sign telling thieves not to bother, that the copper on their street was already stolen.

Police want neighborhoods to be on alert for suspicious activity and say, if possible, cover your unit with wrappings that are specifically for outdoor air conditioning units, available at local hardware stores. Some even come with secure locking devices.

Police also say light up the area around your air conditioning unit from dusk to dawn.

Jamie Benn Lifts Stars Over Wild 2-1 In Shootout

MN News - Sun, 02/05/2012 - 04:56

DALLAS (AP) — Jamie Benn scored in the second round of the shootout and the Dallas Stars maintained their home dominance over the Minnesota Wild with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night.

Loui Eriksson scored for Dallas in the first round, but Matt Cullen got the Wild even in the second. Benn then beat Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom with a wrist shot to give Dallas the advantage, and Kari Lehtonen denied Jared Spurgeon to gain an extra point for Dallas.

The Stars are 11-0-4 in their last 15 home games against the Wild, who haven’t won in Dallas since a 3-2 overtime victory on March 21, 2003.

Kyle Brodziak scored and Backstrom stopped 25 shots for the Wild.

Mike Ribeiro notched a power-play goal and Lehtonen made 33 saves for the Stars.

Minnesota had won its previous two road games after going 11 games without an away victory.

The Wild went on the power play with 1:07 left in regulation when Sheldon Souray was whistled for hooking. The power play extended into the 5-minute overtime, but the Wild couldn’t capitalize.

Dallas had a power play opportunity in the final 55 seconds of the extra session when Cal Clutterbuck was called for tripping, but the Stars were unable to generate many chances.

Ribeiro took advantage of Dallas’ first power play of the night for the game’s initial goal with 4:48 to go in the second period.

Teammate Alex Goligoski’s shot from the point missed the net and bounced off the end boards. Minnesota’s Nick Schultz attempted to clear, but the puck wound up on the stick of Ribeiro, who buried his 11th goal of the season from the slot.

Minnesota drew even at 1 at 5:18 of the final period with the help of a turnover by Dallas’ Jake Dowell. Dowell’s backhand pass up the middle of the ice was intercepted by Brodziak, who skated in alone and lifted a shot over a sprawling Lehtonen for his 15th of the season.

Brodziak has at least a point in each of his last six games.

NOTES: Former Stars G Ed Belfour was recognized before the game for his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2011. Ex-teammates Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Modano, Brett Hull and Jere Lehtinen participated in the ceremony. All were members of the Stars’ Stanley Cup championship in 1999. Fans chanted “Eddie-Eddie” as highlights of Belfour’s career were shown on the video board. … Stars RW Michael Ryder played his 600th NHL game. … C Erik Christensen, acquired Friday in a trade with the New York Rangers, made his debut for the Wild, missing as Minnesota’s leadoff man in the SO. … Dallas LW Brenden Morrow (upper-body injury) missed his eighth game this season. The Stars’ captain has been the subject of trade rumors. … The Wild were without C Mikko Koivu (shoulder), D Clayton Stoner (lower-body), LW Pierre-Marc Bouchard (concussion), LW Guillaume Latendresse (concussion) and RW Jarod Palmer (concussion).

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has had a busy Saturday in Minnesota with a key caucus in the state just three days away.

Paul spoke to nearly 700 supporters at an event Saturday morning in Rochester.

“The item is liberty,” Paul told his supporters. “The item is freedom of choice on how we want to run our own lives.”

Paul spoke his message of personal liberty and fiscal responsibility. He is an advocate of a smaller federal government, and his libertarian-leaning views make him an attractive candidate for many young conservatives.

He followed his Rochester visit up with a town hall style meeting in Chanhassen, where about 600 supporters showed up to hear his message.

“We have to make a decision,” Paul said Saturday. “Do we want to follow the advice of the founders and the Constitution and say that the purpose of the Constitution is … to restrain the government?”

Paul also attracted a crowd of 1,500 at Bethel University in Arden Hills.

Paul skipped the Nevada caucuses to gain early support in the Minnesota caucuses, which are scheduled for Tuesday night.

Paul is scheduled to be in Minnesota on Monday for two rallies. The first one will take place in St. Cloud at the River’s Edge Convention Center at 4 p.m. The second will take place in Minneapolis at the Minneapolis Conventions Center at 7 p.m.

Rick Santorum is expected to be in Minnesota ahead of the caucus on Sunday.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Several cities across the state are playing it safe this unusually warm winter and keeping people off the ice.

Warm temperatures are making outdoor ice rinks unsafe and expensive to keep up. They’ve even forced the City of Minneapolis to temporarily close all of its ice rinks.

Lauren Dunn, an ice skater who thought Saturday’s weather was perfect for the sport, was let down when she found a padlock on the warming house at Lake of the Isles.

“I was really disappointed, ’cause it was the first time that we were going to go skating this year,” she said. “And I was really excited.”

The warmer winter melted away the city’s plans to keep rinks open through the season. At the moment, all 47 of Minneapolis’ outdoor rinks are closed.

Why, exactly, are the rinks closed? They just aren’t safe, according to Dawn Summers, of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Department.

“We have grass on our land rink. We have open water on our lake rinks,” Summers said. “And no one is more disappointed than we are.”

No ice rinks means no outdoor ice skating, broom ball or ice hockey in Minneapolis.

All adult hockey leagues have been postponed, but youth hockey programs have found saving grace indoors.

“We’ve moved our youth league to our two indoor rinks that we have within the system,” Summers said.

Will Ice Rinks Open Later If Conditions Improve?

While no one is allowed on the ice in Minneapolis now, there is still hope in what is left of the skating season.

“We have not called it quits, not quite yet,” Summers said. “It’s not looking good – I have to be honest.”

Other cities, such as Coon Rapids and Elk River, have also closed their outdoor rinks for the season.

For up-to-date information on ice rink conditions in Minneapolis, check out the city’s Ice Rink Status.

Minneapolis Airlift Wing To Lose 8 Aircraft

MN News - Sun, 02/05/2012 - 01:40

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis-based 934th Airlift Wing will lose its eight C-130 Hercules aircraft next year.

Air Force officials say 82 Air Force Reserve Command aircraft at bases across the country will be retired during the 2013 fiscal year.

The changes are in response to the Budget Control Act’s $487 billion in cuts from the defense budget, which will be implemented over the next decade. About $54 billion of those cuts will be applied to the Air Force.

A fighter wing of the Minnesota Air National Guard will remain in Duluth, allaying fears that the base would be closed.

Bases in 13 states will see changes in connection with the budget cuts.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney cruised to a decisive victory in the Nevada caucuses Saturday night, notching a second straight triumph over a field of rivals suddenly struggling to keep pace.

In victory, the former Massachusetts governor unleashed a sharp attack on President Barack Obama, whose economic policies he said have “made these tough times last longer.”

In a state with the worst joblessness in the country, Romney added, “This week he’s been trying to take a bow for 8.3 percent unemployment. Not so fast, Mr. President. This is the 36th straight month with unemployment above the red line your own administration drew.”

The former Massachusetts governor held a double-digit lead over his nearest pursuer as the totals mounted in a state where fellow Mormons accounted for roughly a quarter of all caucus-goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul vied for a distant second. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum trailed the field.

Returns from 14 of 17 counties showed Romney with 42 percent support, Gingrich with 26 percent, Paul with 18 percent and Santorum with 13 percent.

Yet to report its results was Clark County, which includes Las Vegas and often accounts for half or more of the votes in a statewide election.

In defeat, Gingrich swatted aside any talk of a withdrawal and emphatically renewed an earlier vow to campaign into the party convention in Tampa this summer. He said his goal was to “find a series of victories which by the end of Texas primary will leave us at parity” with Romney by early April.

Romney’s victory capped a week that began with his double-digit win in the Florida primary. That contest was as intense as Nevada’s caucuses were sedate — so quiet that they produced little television advertising, no candidate debates and only a modest investment of time by the contenders.

A total of 28 Republican National Convention delegates were at stake in caucuses held across a sprawling state that drew little attention in the nominating campaign but figures to be a fierce battleground in the fall between the winner of the GOP nomination and Democratic President Obama. The state’s unemployment rate was measured at 12.6 percent in December, the worst in the country.

According to the AP count, Romney began the day with 87 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. Gingrich had 26, Santorum 14 and Paul 4.

As he did in Florida, Romney was eager to take on the mantle of nominee-in-waiting when he spoke to supporters — even though Gingrich, Santorum and Paul have said they intend to remain in the race.

“President Obama seems to believe America’s role as leader in the world is a thing of the past. I believe the 21st century will be and must be an American century,” Romney said to cheers from his backers.

Preliminary results of a poll of Nevada Republicans entering their caucuses showed that nearly half said the most important consideration in their decision was a candidate’s ability to defeat Obama this fall, a finding in line with other states.

About one-quarter of those surveyed said they are Mormon, roughly the same as in 2008, when Romney won with more than a majority of the vote in a multi-candidate field.

The entrance poll was conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press at 25 randomly selected caucus sites. It included 1,553 interviews and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The caucus rules were a demonstration of democracy and a reflection of religious diversity.

Nevada awarded its delegates in proportion to the caucus vote totals, meaning that any candidate who captured at least 3.57 percent of the total number of ballots cast would be rewarded. By contrast, Romney’s victory in the Florida primary on Tuesday netted him all 50 of the delegates at stake there.

While most caucuses were held during the day, an exception was Clark County, the state’s largest. There, party officials arranged to hold one meeting well after sundown at the request of orthodox Jews who observe bans on driving, writing or other work-a-day activities during the Sabbath.

Romney’s victory in the state’s 2008 caucuses, coupled with the heavy presence of voters who share his Mormon faith, turned Nevada into something of a way-station on the campaign calendar.

There are just over 175,000 Mormons in the state, roughly 7 percent of the population. But they accounted for nearly a quarter of all 2008 Nevada GOP caucus-goers.

Gingrich said he’d be happy to finish second, behind Romney and ahead of Paul. Paul, a Texas lawmaker, was one of two candidates to air television ads in the state, hoping for a close second-place finish if not an upset.

Romney was the other, joined by Restore Our Future, the ubiquitous organization that supports him and has been heavily involved in earlier states.

Santorum campaigned relatively little in Nevada, although he picked up the support of Sharron Angle, a tea party favorite who won the GOP Senate nomination in a 2010 upset and then lost her race to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

From Nevada, the calendar turns to caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and a non-binding primary in Missouri on Tuesday.

Maine caucuses end next Saturday, and the next seriously contested states are expected to be primaries in Michigan and Arizona on Feb. 28.

Nevada caucuses, coming four days after the Florida primary, meant little time for the type of intense campaign that characterized the first month of the race.

The most memorable event of the four-day Nevada campaign was an endorsement that flamboyant billionaire Donald Trump bestowed on Romney in Las Vegas in a circus-like atmosphere that followed reports he would back Gingrich. The campaign event was brief, and Paul mocked The Donald and his decision. “I don’t think he has that much credibility. I don’t understand why we pay attention to him,” he said.

By the time Nevada Republicans caucused, Paul was campaigning in Minnesota, Santorum in Colorado.

“The one thing that is on our side is the American people are waking up,” Paul said in a speech in Rochester, Minn., that was frequently interrupted by applause. The Texan has yet to win a primary or caucus state.

Santorum, who eked out a victory in Iowa a month ago, has faded since. He said he has raised $1 million online in recent days to help him in the upcoming states.

Gingrich combined campaigning and fundraising in his time in Nevada, in hopes of righting a campaign that was victorious in the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21, only to crater 10 days later in Florida.

Eager to demonstrate he intends to fight on, he announced plans to campaign next week in Ohio, one of several states with a Super Tuesday primary on March 6.

His Florida victory in hand, Romney was acting like a front-runner again, campaigning against Obama more than Gingrich. Restore Our Future took on the former speaker, airing ads that said he consistently overstated his connections to Ronald Reagan.

Chris Doleman Makes Hall of Fame

MN News - Sun, 02/05/2012 - 01:05

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Curtis Martin has gone from the mean streets of Pittsburgh to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The star running back with the Patriots and Jets for 11 seasons was one of six players elected Saturday to the shrine. Martin once disliked playing the game, but used it to escape a neighborhood where his grandmother was murdered.

“When I get awarded something like the Hall of Fame, it’s almost foreign to me,” said Martin, the NFL’s No. 4 career rusher. “This wasn’t something I planned on doing. Football is something I did so I didn’t end up jailed or dead.

“If you make up your mind to just do the right thing no matter what … and you stick to it, which I did, this is how things can turn around. I feel as if my life turned around from what it used to be, and I think anyone has a chance.”

Martin and four linemen were elected to the hall, along with one senior committee choice. He is joined by Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Willie Roaf, Dermontti Dawson, and senior selection Jack Butler.

Jerome Bettis, Cris Carter and Bill Parcells were among the finalists who didn’t make it.

“I’m not even close to this position, I actually don’t think I’d play more than four or five years without Bill Parcells,” Martin said, indicating he will have his former coach present him for induction on Aug. 4 in Canton, Ohio.

A panel of 44 media members voted in the six men.

Martin made it for his consistency and durability, rushing for 14,101 and 90 touchdowns. He rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first 10 seasons, the first three with New England and the others with the Jets. The 1995 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Martin won the NFL rushing title in 2004 with 1,697 yards.

Doleman and Kennedy were sackmasters from the defensive line, Doleman at end and Kennedy at tackle.

Doleman had 150 1/2 sacks in his 15 seasons, mostly with Minnesota, and was one of the prototype agile yet powerful pass rushers who dominate the game today. He made the Pro Bowl eight times and was fourth on the sacks list when he retired.

“I am totally blown away by this and humbled by it,” Doleman said, adding his son, Evan, would present him for induction. “When they call your name, you’re absolutely numb.”

Kennedy was a force inside, both as a run stopper and in threatening quarterbacks. The 1992 Defensive Player of the Year made eight Pro Bowls, had 58 sacks — an unusually high total for a tackle — and spent his entire 11-season career with Seattle.

Roaf spent one season at right tackle, then the rest of his 13 seasons on the left side, making 11 Pro Bowls. He made the All-Decade team for the 1990s.

Dawson made seven Pro Bowls as the Steelers’ center, that rare snapper who also could block defensive players one on one. He replaced a Hall of Famer, Mike Webster, and started for Pittsburgh for most of his 13 pro seasons.

Butler also played for the Steelers as a cornerback from 1951-59, picking off 52 passes, at the time second most in NFL history. But he was best known for his tackling skills.

“They told me I was good. I didn’t know I was good,” Butler said. “I never, ever, ever thought I would be here.”

Guard Will Shields didn’t get in — the only first-year eligible player to make the 15-man finals. Shields started all but one of the 224 games in his 14 seasons in Kansas City.

Bettis also fell short. He was the 1993 Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Rams who retired in 2006 after winning his only Super Bowl with the Steelers. He is the NFL’s No. 5 career rusher.

Parcells coached the Giants to Super Bowl titles in the 1987 and 1991 games and also lost the 1997 Super Bowl with New England. He coached the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys, too.

Carter is the No. 4 career receiver with 1,101 in 16 seasons with three teams.

Others not voted in were receivers Tim Brown and Andre Reed, defensive end/linebackers Kevin Greene and Charles Haley, defensive back Aeneas Williams, and former 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo Jr.

The other senior finalist, guard Dick Stanfel, was not chosen, either.
